She the People 2: The Resistance Continues Reviews

"...To its credit, She the People ranges beyond strictly feminist topics. Channeling Gilda Radner during an exceptional improv skit, “Debunked,” Jo Scott takes on conspiracy theories run amok. Carisa Barreca confronts loopy anti-vaxxers and other sketches shine a comedic light on Evangelicals and ethnic typecasting. Make no mistake, however. Beneath all the mirth lies a bedrock of critical thought. Every now and then, skits end on a serious note, forcing us to ponder sober realities."

"...Like a team of crack fighter pilots, the women of Second City’s She the People: The Resistance Continues! are on a hilarious and irreverent mission — the strafing of sexist absurdities of every stripe. A whirlwind rotation of sketches punctuated by a comically clubby soundtrack, this isn’t so much man-bashing as a full-scale outrage at everything society expects of women."

"...There are, of course, lighter moments, including one of my favorite song and dance numbers, "Rubenesque," in which some of the casts' more voluptuous vixens flaunt their bods in glorious, girl-power fashion. And the game show, "Ovary Reaction" (pronounced "overreaction") where female contestants express 'excessive' 'hysterical' reactions when faced with piddly little things like the disastrous effects of climate change and an ongoing acceptance of rape culture in America."

"...Supporting the cast is a solid production team. Writer-Director Carly Heffernan manages a full stage in constant motion with ease; under her direction, the transitions between sketches, vignettes, and songs never felt forced, and the continuous movement felt more natural than chaotic. Barreca also serves as assistant director and oversees the show's fun choreography. Meghan Raham's set was fun and functional, particularly when paired with Sarah Tundermann's bright and energetic lighting and projections."
