The most famous love story in the world and one of Shakespeare’s early poetic masterworks, Romeo & Juliet follows two star-crossed lovers from love at first sight to eternal life hereafter. Caught tragically between two feuding families, alike in dignity and in enmity, Shakespeare’s immortal young lovers try to fashion a new world amid the violence of the old, but cataclysmic choices and tragic twists propel them toward a final confrontation with fate. After helming the highly-lauded productions of Kiss Me, Kate and Man of La Mancha, Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul directs his first Shakespeare production at STC—what is sure to be a spectacular, contemporary and heart-rending vision.

"....The recognizable, vaguely claustrophobic environment does not always, however, catapult the performance toward the aching vulnerability of a really affecting “Romeo and Juliet.” It may be that the design announces itself too early: You get the picture as soon as thuggish Montagues (shaved heads, dark suits, trendy T-shirts) enter the nightclub with its overturned tables and toppled potted plants. A little awkwardly, there is a sacred component to this profanely violent world, too, a crucifix in a corner and a large Madonna materializing in that DJ booth."

"...The two leads are cast well. It seems that Juliet, the character, has more to do in the second half of the play than the first and Romeo, vice versa. But the two characters as played by Andrew Veenstra and Ayana Workman are naïve and impatient. Their youthful spirit shines through and does make their ending quite moving. There are other fine performances in this production as well. Inga Ballard as the Nurse is funny and insightful; Jeffrey Carlson as Mercutio is quite fabulous; and Keith Hamilton Cobb and Judith Lightfoot Clarke are affecting as Juliet's distant and possessive parents Lord and Lady Capulet."

"....Men’s eyes were made to look and let them gaze upon the riveting new production of Romeo & Juliet at Shakespeare Theatre Company. Directed by Alan Paul, this revitalized and somewhat modern approach to the Bard’s most woeful tragedy attends the fates gaily and with swift justice for both the poetic nature of the text and the emotional capacity of the plot. Perilously little can be ascribed in complaint, save for the missed opportunities to push the conceptualized vision on the whole in a slightly different direction, thus rendering it a perfectly impressive representation of the company’s ability to perform the classics and do so well in a praiseworthy manner."
