"... “Now is the winter of our discontent.” This famous line uttered by the bloody king (and we all know what proceeds therein) in one of Shakespeare’s great bloody tragedies Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. But The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is moving the gory tyrant not only out of the Shakespearean era – to World War I – but their unique presentation involves a mobile audience that creates a disturbingly intimate format at their appropriately chosen dark and ominous venue. A decaying ruins now preserved by the county, The Bard’s bloody drama is being launched in what was once an antebellum finishing school for girls. Set against the setting sun and moving well into the darkness of night it’s the perfect location for the dreary drama to unfold."

"...Another thing that makes this "Richard III" notable is that artistic director Ian Gallanar has updated the setting to World War I. There are soldiers dressed in uniforms suitable for that 20th-century conflict; and other characters are outfitted in Edwardian-era suits and dresses. Barbed wire runs along some of the walls. The stage smoke billowing out of windows and across battlefields serves as a scary reminder of how mustard gas was used in that modern conflict. And when Richard goes into battle and famously cries out "My kingdom for a horse," it does not sound anachronistic considering the extent to which horses were used during World War I."

Vince Eisenson, a resident member of the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, nails Richard beginning with the famous opening lines, “Now is the winter of our discontent …” and carries him and the entire production through to the final bloody battle scene where he loses his horse and his life. Eisenson’s portrayal is a tribute to director Ian Gallanar’s casting acumen. A considerably younger Richard than we are accustomed to seeing, Eisenson has Richard constantly on the move, always prepared with a rapid riposte appropriate to whatever conceit is currently occupying his attention.
