Reefer Madness Reviews

"...A musical satire of the 1936 propaganda–turned–cult-classic film of the same name, Reefer Madness is playing through June 2 at NextStop Theatre Company in Herndon, Virginia. The slapsticky campfest originated as a stark warning to parents about the harms to their kids of “marihuana.” A prudish lecturer guides the audience through a retelling of the tragic tale of Jimmy and Mary Lane, high school sweethearts whose lives were forever changed by the evils of the drug."

"...If done properly, “Reefer Madness” can take parody to outrageous heights and make it work, the envelope constantly being pushed with content and wacky antics. (Think of Roger Corman’s cringe-worthy, low-budget 1960 movie, “Little Shop of Horrors,” which spawned the celebrated musical of the same name.) The purveyor of all this is NextStop Theatre Company’s production of “Reefer Madness” which is thinly controlled bedlam unleashed upon us, interestingly paralleling the effects of weed—but in a sober environment."

"...The thing about Reefer Madness, though, is that it takes parody to the point of insanity – and that works brilliantly. The over-the-top antics, maniacal facial expressions, exaggerated movements, and sophomoric humor are all cleverly layered over a far more subtle and thoughtful social commentary, and it’s in this aspect that NextStop Theatre Company’s production, which opened this past weekend, particularly excels."
