"... Hileman is flat-out delightful as Marie-Therese, an unlovely Spaniard in the gorgeous French court. The young queen is domineering but lonely, and Hileman makes the pouts, outbursts and laments lively and instinctive — she belabors nothing. The rest of the cast is as fresh: Drew Kopas brings an oiliness to the appetites of Louis, Tony Tsendeas wears his cynicism lightly as the court painter (the play’s title evokes the Diego Velazquez painting), and Fatima Quander is eventually moving as the orphaned black girl recalling all this."

The emotional heart of the play is the unusual friendship that develops between Queen Marie-Therese and Nabo Sensugali, and the actors playing these roles have expert timing as they explore the dynamics of this relationship. Although the playwright's tendency to reiterate thematic points about gender and race verges on vexing redundancy, she has the good sense to make these points through characters we care about."

"...The set of the production is also remarkable. It is spare, though elegant: a large carpet adorned with cherubs, several luxurious chairs, a gilt bed. But the use of these minimal props is often ingenious. The box Nabo arrives in, for instance, converts into his sleeping quarters and ultimately becomes a crucifix. A floor-to-ceiling six-paned mirror backs the action and is repositioned throughout the play to subtly hint at geographic, temporal, and even moral divisions. When slanted forward under bright stage lights, it reflects the scenes that play out in front of it. But when the lights dim, the audience can see behind it. Toward the end of the play, an engrossing scene shows Marie reciting Hail Marys at the front of the stage while behind the hazy mirror, in dim blue lighting, dancers move to African beats."

Las Meninas casts a wide net – positing questions of race, gender, alienation, loneliness – which offers itself to anyone in search of something, or somebody. Though sometimes dizzying in its scope, Rep Stage delivers this challenging and nuanced piece with grace, and above all else, humanity.
