"...In an intermission-less stretch of 90 minutes, the play largely succeeds in providing context and fleshing out characters, although it would be nice to get more of a sense of Behn's theatrical career (the plot concerns her steps toward that career). The story is deliverered in between bursts of farce -- lots of doors opening and closing, confused identities, sudden plot twists."

"...While I'd advise some online searches for the historical figures and the period, before or after you see the play, the thoughtful program guide and the crystal clear production with a universal message or two, will speak across time and place. Some of the truths that the play drives home are quaint, if not debatable, but this is a world in which you'll be happy to spend some time. This entertaining play with first-rate design (on a modest budget) along with excellent acting and direction is highly recommended."

This wickedly clever Restoration comedy has enough twists and turns to keep the magical moments bouncing along from beginning to end. The opening prolog sets the tone beautifully, with the adorable Christine Demuth challenging the audience to ease the lines of demarcation between either and Or.Even when the script gathers momentum and seems dangerously on the precipice of falling into standard farce, the playwright tosses in a concept or conceit that spirals the production back into a thought-provoking experience.

"...As always at Rep Stage, the production design is superb, particularly Melanie Clark’s sumptuous costumes. James Fouchard’s colorful set is ornate without distracting, and Terry Cobb’s lighting design is a crucial element in the play’s moving conclusion. Ann Warren’s sound design includes perhaps a few too many classic rock melodies—I’m still not sure why “Norwegian Wood” plays each time Behn and Nell kiss—though I understand the impulse, given the script’s repeated suggestion that the 1660s were not so different in spirit from the 1960s."
