"...Strong, committed work from the entire company keeps the audience emotionally on the hook even in moments when the dense plot, and frequent references to two characters we never see, threaten to induce vertigo. The most haunting section of the evening is the fable-like interlude wherein young Aliide hides her dissident brother-in-law in the cellar of her house, a years-long act of love that curdles over time. Aliide’s not-wholly-pure motives are what make her a compelling character, and both Korval and Waters give her many layers their due."

"...To portray the tale’s strong women, director Robert McNamara has assembled an impressive trio: Waters and Koval are equally strong yet flawed as young and old Aliide. Delaney is known for giving theatergoers their money’s worth, and her emotionally strung out Zara is no exception. Eric Lucas offers some comic relief as Aliide’s communist doctrinaire husband, and Lee Ordeman is appropriately handsome and restless as young Aliide’s unrequited love. Stas Wronka and Armand Sindoni play the heavies (Soviet soldiers and pimps)."

McNamara and the cast have a good grasp of the type of flinty determination it takes to play a story like this, and they stay attentive to detail. Some actors’ accents are far more convincing than others, which is surely due in part to the multinational casting. But the character work is strong throughout.
