Bethesda becomes Neverland this summer, as Imagination Stage presents Peter Pan and Wendy, a swashbuckling adventure with audience participation. Directed by Kathryn Chase Bryer, it is a story in which two young heroes must decide if growing up is really all that bad.

"...Fortunately, the action becomes zippier and funnier once Peter Pan has flown Wendy (who has no siblings in this telling of the story) off to Neverland. Conjuring up the flying sequences are abstract video projections, vaguely suggestive of bird's-eye panoramas, that move behind the performers. (Stanford is the projection designer.) But once the travelers land, the world becomes vivid and specific. A regal Tiger Lily (Angela Miller) stalks around with a bow and arrow. The crocodile slithers by, showing off its watch-gear scales and alarm-clock eyes (references to the fact that Hook has fed the croc a ticking timepiece). Eccentric mermaids with blue-rag hair and teacup-encrusted bodices (Matt Dewberry and Dan Van Why) swim through a lagoon. (Katie Touart designed the witty costumes.)"

"...Imagination Stage's production of the musical version of Peter Pan, Peter Pan and Wendy, written by Alyn Cardarelli with music by Steve Goers, is based on J.M. Barrie's 1904 stage play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Barrie's stage play focuses on Peter, a boy who wanted nothing but to play and remain a child. Peter's adventures don't bring him closer to adulthood, and although some might feel sorry for Peter because at the end of the story his friends choose to leave him for a warm happy home with parents, he knows he is always happiest in his arrested state. This basic formula doesn't change in Peter Pan and Wendy; Peter still refuses the idea of a family and adulthood. The question in this production is - will Wendy embrace growing up? Or will she always want to be a kid with Peter?"
