The Welders to Present Transmission

Transmission

The Welders-Washington's only playwrights' collective devoted exclusively to developing and producing new work-have launched their fifth production.Transmission, by Gwydion Suilebhan, opens April 30, 2016 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. "Transmission is immersive and participatory," Suilebhan says. "It's a kind of 'performance sermon' on the viral evolution of culture from the radio age to the present. I created it for an intentionally-small audience of twenty people, all seated in 1930s armchairs clustered around period radios." Suilebhan will also perform the piece, which was developed with an extensive creative team, including Eric Shimelonis (sound design), Colin K. Bills (lighting and experience design), Deb Sivigny (costume design), Jacy Barber (props design), and a trio of dramaturgs: Jordana Fraider, who performs in the piece as well; Stephen Spotswood; and Maura Suilebhan. Ryan Maxwell will direct. "Working with my creative team has been enriching and enlightening," says Suilebhan. "And it's been a true collaborative effort." Suilebhan is the last founding member of the company to become artistic director. This July, The Welders will hand off the company to a new generation of theater artists. Transmission will run April 30 - May 28, 2016 at The Atlas Performing Arts Center. Previews begin May 27. Tickets are available at www.atlasarts.org.
