Young Americans at 1st Stage Theatre

A road trip story that spans two decades is heading to Tysons, Virginia this spring, as 1st Stage Theatre presents Young Americans, running April 9 through 26, 2026. The production marks another ambitious season offering from one of the Washington area's most celebrated smaller companies, and promises the kind of intimate, character-driven storytelling that has become a hallmark of the 1st Stage experience. Whether you're a longtime patron of the theatre or discovering it for the first time, this is the kind of show that reminds you why live theatre matters.

The play follows Joe and Jenny, a young immigrant couple driving cross-country to their new home, finding unexpected joy and connection along the way — at roadside landmarks, motels, and more than a few IHOP locations. Twenty years later, Joe makes that same journey again, this time with his 19-year-old daughter Lucy. As the two trips unspool in parallel, the play builds a layered, tender portrait of a family navigating memory, love, and the distances — literal and emotional — that define us. BroadwayWorld praised it as a "wonderful little dramedy" that "feels as wide open as the road from East to West Coast."

Director Nikki Mirza leads a cast of returning 1st Stage artists, including Jasmine Joy Brooks, previously seen in The Mamalogues; Surasree Das, a veteran of Birthday Candles and The Lake Effect; and Shawn Sebastian Naar, who appeared in Between Riverside and Crazy and The Piano Lesson. The production features scenic design by Debra Kim Sivigny, with projection design by Sophie Smrcka, lighting by Emily Pann, sound by Adam Mendelson, costumes by Paris Washington, props by Erica Bass, and intimacy coaching by Lorraine Ressegger.

Performances run Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm and 7:30 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm. The runtime is approximately ninety minutes with no intermission. General admission tickets are dynamically priced at $25, $40, and $55, with $15 tickets available for students, educators, and military. Tickets can be purchased at 1ststage.org or by calling the box office at 703-854-1856.

Audiences looking to dig deeper into the production have several opportunities to do so through 1st Stage's Community Conversations series, held following the 2 pm Saturday performances. On April 11, attendees can meet and chat with members of the design team; April 12 brings a conversation with director Nikki Mirza; and on April 18, the cast joins the discussion. All three conversations are a great way to engage with the artists bringing this story to life.

1st Stage, an award-winning professional theatre in the heart of Tysons, has been on a remarkable run of late — its production of The Nance earned four Helen Hayes Awards in 2025, including Outstanding Production, making it the most nominated production in the region that year. Young Americans looks to continue that tradition of intimate, resonant storytelling that has made 1st Stage one of the DC area's most compelling theatrical destinations.
