Variations on Silence Gives Voice to Twelve New Plays at Strand Theater

Rapid Lemon Productions returns with its annual Variations Project, a bill of twelve world premiere ten-minute plays built around a single theme, playing at Strand Theater in Baltimore through July 26, 2026. This year's edition, Variations on Silence, takes its theme from last year's audience vote, and the resulting evening proves the concept has plenty to say.

The theme gets a loose and inventive treatment. Rather than an evening of quiet, the plays explore silence in its many forms: the silence of estrangement and distance, of things left unsaid, of voices that should be heard but aren't, and even the absence of silence in a world of constant noise. Some pieces give voices to things presumed silent, while others examine what happens when communication breaks down entirely. A few of the works carry political undertones, handled with care and without heavy-handedness, and the material ranges from uncomfortably realistic to genuinely outrageous.

The lineup includes "The Void's Had Enough of Your Noise" by Colin Tillery, "Things Unsaid" by Regan Marie Nelson, "Can You Hear Me Now?" by Wendy Matt, "Voicemail" by Gabe Fremuth, "Moving In" by Allison Chen, "Body Language" by Taylor Leigh Lamb, "On Hold" by Douglass E. Smith Jr., "Save the Monarchs" by Tia Nellie, "Who Cares?" by Alfonso Morales-Escobar, "Dark Matter Department of Community Services" by Deborah Carry-Amland, "Waiting for You" by Mae Philippe-Auguste, and "Gus" by Natasha Joyce and Martin Thompson. The subjects run from a post-apocalyptic landscape to the everyday grind of being placed on hold, from moving into a new home to the daily barrage of personalized marketing.

Director Janis Hannon, a Variations Project veteran who has previously served the show as playwright and stage manager, shapes the diverse material into a balanced whole. An ensemble of six actors, Alexys Adams, Cat Bustos, Steven Forrester, Jae Jones, Caleb Madison, and ReginaGinaG, takes on multiple characters across the two-hour evening, shifting between serious and comic roles with impressive range. The production is supported by Steve Sawicki's flexible set design, which doubles as a projection surface, lighting by Martin Sundiata, costumes by UMBC student Tim Clark, and sound design embedded throughout by producer Max Garner.

Part of the fun of the Variations Project is that the audience picks the future. Attendees vote on the theme for the 2027 edition by dropping cash into one of three glass milk jugs, with every dollar counting as a vote. The project has become a proving ground for local playwrights, drawing both returning authors and new voices to the Baltimore theatre scene each year.
