For more than two decades, Fuego Flamenco has offered a rare opportunity for Washington audiences to immerse themselves in the world of flamenco — a living art form that blends dance, music, and song with heart-stirring emotion. This year’s edition features three major productions, each with its own distinctive voice and story.

The festival begins with the Washington premiere of “Crónica de un suceso” (November 6–10), created and performed by Spanish virtuoso Rafael Ramírez. The work pays tribute to the legendary Antonio Gades, the groundbreaking artist whose influence helped shape modern flamenco. Ramírez’s performance promises to blend reverence and reinvention, embodying the spirit of a genre that constantly evolves while honoring its roots.

From November 14–16, the Flamenco Aparicio Dance Company returns to GALA with its acclaimed piece “Enredo.” Originally premiered at the theater in 2023, the work explores the tension between individuality and community through dynamic choreography and evocative music, reflecting flamenco’s duality as both deeply personal and profoundly collective expression.

The festival concludes November 21–22 with the world premiere of “Las mujeres que habitan en mí,” conceived and performed by the remarkable Irene Lozano. This new work is a deeply personal exploration of identity and transformation, taking audiences on an emotional journey through the artist’s inner world and the many women who inhabit her spirit.

In addition to the performances, the festival includes two interactive events designed to deepen appreciation for flamenco’s cultural roots. On November 8, GALA hosts Aula de Flamenco, a special session led by Dr. José Miguel Hernández Jaramillo, exploring the art form’s diverse influences and its ongoing evolution. On November 15, Flamenco en Familia invites children and parents to experience the joy of flamenco together with dancer Sara Jerez and guitarist Ricardo Marlow.

Performances take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $25–$50, with discounts available for seniors, students, and groups. A Flamenco Festival Pass is also available for $120, offering admission to all three mainstage productions.

Since its founding in 1976, GALA Hispanic Theatre has been a cornerstone of Latino arts in Washington, DC, fostering cross-cultural understanding and celebrating the vibrancy of Latin American performance traditions. The Fuego Flamenco Festival remains one of its signature events — an annual reminder that flamenco is not just a dance, but a living expression of joy, struggle, and soul.
