Dog Man The Musical at Capital One Hall

If your household has ever had a Dog Man book devoured in a single sitting, brace yourself — the beloved half-dog, half-policeman is leaping off the page and onto the stage. Dog Man: The Musical, the touring sensation based on Dav Pilkey's globally beloved book series, is coming to Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia for a brief, don't-miss engagement on April 3 and 4.

Produced by TheaterWorksUSA, the show features a book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila and music by Brad Alexander — the same creative duo behind the Emmy-winning Peg + Cat on PBS — with direction and choreography by Jen Wineman. The result is a production that feels every bit as energetic and irreverent as the comics that inspired it.

The premise is as wonderfully absurd as any Pilkey fan would hope. Best friends George and Harold, now in fifth grade, have decided it's time to graduate from making comics to writing a full-blown musical starring their favorite character: Dog Man, the crime-biting sensation who is part dog, part man, and entirely hero. With the head of a dog and the body of a policeman, Dog Man loves nothing more than fighting crime — and chewing on the furniture. But can he save the city from Flippy the cyborg fish and his army of Beasty Buildings? Can he outsmart Petey, the world's most evil cat, who has cloned himself to exact revenge on the doggy do-gooder? And critically — will George and Harold manage to finish the show before lunchtime?

The production is a New York Times Critics' Pick, and Pilkey himself has called it "the perfect mash-up of memorable music, humor, and love." The show originally premiered off-Broadway in June 2019 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, extended due to popular demand, and returned to New York at New World Stages in March 2023. Now in its third year of national touring, the production has played to packed houses at major venues across the country and continues to win over kids and adults alike.
