Best Medicine Rep Artistic Director John Morogiello to Retire at the End of Season
In a statement earlier today, Best Medicine Rep Theater Company's Artistic Director John Morogiello announced that he will retire at the end of the current season in May 2027. In the statement, Morogiello said, "I have devoted more than one sixth of my life to this company and its mission. Now, however, I believe that it is time for me to place the creative vision of the company into the hands of someone else and move on to other projects." A search for a replacement will begin in the coming weeks.
John Morogiello's plays have been produced off-Broadway (Abingdon Theatre Company), internationally (Vienna's English Theatre, Jerusalem Kahn Theater), and at some of America's premier regional theaters, including Old Globe, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and American Players Theatre. In 2015, he opted to bring his work to his hometown in Gaithersburg, along with the work of other talented comedy writers, and began to plan for Best Medicine Rep. Since 2016, Morogiello has worked almost exclusively for Best Medicine Rep, presenting world premiere productions of his plays In the Gutter, Comedy of Venice, Die, Mr. Darcy, Die!, Civilizing Lusby, and The Crater Sisters' Christmas Special (co-written with Lori Boyd).
For 6 years, Best Medicine Rep operated out of a storefront at Lakeforest Mall. With the mall's closure, the company began renting and borrowing spaces wherever they could, dividing their time among The Writer's Center, Gaithersburg Arts Barn, and Asbury Methodist Village.
Morogiello incorporated the company along with board Vice-President Rebecca A. Herron. Its mission is to develop and produce new comedies and the artistic, educational, and cultural development of the greater Gaithersburg area. The company recently launched its 10th Anniversary Season with Morogiello's comedy Stonewall's Bust, which runs at The Writer's Center in Bethesda through October 25, 2026.
