Life of Pi Reviews

"..."Life of Pi," Yann Martel's Booker Prize-winning, mega-selling 2001 novel, has already been adapted into an immersive 3D film that won Academy Awards for its direction, cinematography and dazzlingly photo-realistic digital effects. But the book is a natural fit for the more primordial realm of the stage, given its philosophical investigation of belief. Theater has always asked us to take more on faith than movies have."

"...The production is spellbinding. Notable performances include Pi's Father (Sorab Wadia) who deftly communicates the weariness and concern driving him to protect his family from danger, and the Cook (Ben Durocher) who exudes cruelty and eventually, inhuman savagery. The demanding Mr. Okamoto (Alan Ariano) who is investigating the shipwreck and Lulu Chen (Mi Kang), an empathetic Canadian diplomat maintain a precarious equilibrium as Pi recounts his fantastical tale. Finally, Savidu Geevaratne portrays a curious and enthusiastic Pi whose grace and athleticism interact seamlessly with the magnificent puppeteers breathing life into the zoo animals."

"...A boy is shipwrecked for 227 days on a lifeboat with a terrifying companion-an adult Bengal tiger. The full tale, the boy says, "will make you believe in God." With breathtaking visuals and puppetry, this extraordinary story leaps to the stage in the U.S. national tour of Life of Pi. Adapted by playwright Lolita Chakrabarti from Yann Martel's literary masterpiece, this production stays true to the novel while putting spectacle in the spotlight."

"...Tiger, tiger, burning bright... In the touring production of Life of Pi, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti from Yann Martel's novel, and now playing at the Kennedy Center, it is a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, along with an ensemble of other animals - a zebra, hyena, orangutan, goat, sea turtle, a luminous school of fish - who are the stars, making the show a visual delight."
