Master of comedy and farce, Ken Ludwig, has adapted his Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Lend Me A Tenor for a new generation, with the genders swapped. The hilarious result is Lend Me A Soprano! It's 1934, and world-famous Italian soprano Elena Firenzi, the biggest star of her era, is in town for a one-night-only concert with the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. The gala performance is the apex of general manager Lucille Wylie's career, and she's given her assistant Jo one job - keep Elena away from men and liquor until the curtain rises. But when events spiral out of Jo's control, she's got one chance to set everything right.

"...Things feel a bit sweaty and effortful, especially in the early going — not the finest quality in a farce, though the cast may well settle into the show and tighten up its rhythms. And for all his undisputed success, Ludwig has always displayed more technical acumen than writerly genius; his shows work like sturdy timepieces, but their language rarely fizzes, their ridiculousnesses rarely evanescing into the sublime."

"...Olney Theatre Center's Roberts Mainstage is presenting Ken Ludwig's "Lend Me a Soprano" through March 10. This is a reimagining (by the author) of Ludwig's Tony-winning farce "Lend Me a Tenor," a staple of professional, community, and school theatres nationwide...which I've somehow never seen. As the change in the title suggests, the production is gender-swapped; the male roles in the original are female in the new version and vice versa. Having not seen the original, I cannot speak to the difference in effect in the new version, but can only evaluate "Soprano" on its own merits...and it has many merits."
