Into the Woods Reviews

"..."Into the Woods" is freighted with so many ideas that it can get lost in its own cleverness. At two hours and 45 minutes including intermission, it overstays a bit. But in its central preoccupation with consequences - how our wishes and choices affect ourselves and others - one gets an inkling of why "Into the Woods" seems especially urgent right now."
"...Hatching the company’s 32nd Sondheim production, the magical elves and designers at Signature have created a transporting backdrop that music director Jon Kalbfleisch and his impressive 15-piece orchestra fill with the late maestro’s loping, soaring score."

It's one of those rare shows where all of the artistic and technical elements are captivating - this show is a holiday feast for both the eye and the ear."

"..."God is in the details" was one of Stephen Sondheim's three key principles for his craft, "in the service of clarity, without which nothing else matters." The theater gods are surely smiling at Signature Theatre's deliciously detailed production of a Sondheim classic, Into the Woods, directed and choreographed by Matthew Gardiner with extraordinary clarity."

"...Signature Theatre’s latest production delivers the excellence Sondheim deserves to a local audience. A large cast and orchestra alongside gorgeous costumes and scenic design make this an extravaganza worth seeing. Although the fairytale inspiration and whimsical design may seem perfect for all ages, “Into the Woods” is best enjoyed by adults and older children, who won’t mind the long runtime and dark themes. With that caveat, this coming-of-age tale will stir and bewitch with its clever and unexpected twists. So, mark your calendar and find your way into the woods!"

"...Let’s start by saying that Into the Woods is one of the most accessible and beloved musicals of Stephen Sondheim. The book by James Lapine and the music and lyrics by Sondheim offer everything we want from a musical. It has catchy tunes, fascinating subplots, cleverness, magic, love stories of all sorts and a call for the audience to use their imaginations. The current incarnation of this play at Signature Theatre, directed and choreographed by Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner, is really good, but falls short of brilliance."
