Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Reviews

"...Cleverly, the plot unwinds on two tracks, picking up right after the epilogue of the final book. One follows the now middle-aged Harry and company, revealing how they deal with new problems of adulthood, like workplace politics and parenting a rebellious teen. The other follows their sons, Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, through their own school years, retreading beloved Hogwarts rituals, such as the Sorting Hat and Quidditch practice. The effectiveness of relying on the audience's nostalgia for familiar narrative beats depends utterly on where you fall on the Potter spectrum."

"...From the final battle at Hogwarts to the "expelliarmus" spells, the phenomenon of Harry Potter is a marvel. Though the story made its way into the cultural zeitgeist nearly three decades ago, a new generation injected into the beloved Hogwarts uncovers new challenges while paying satisfying homage to the story the world fell in love with. The "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" North American Tour brings its movie-like magic to life at The National Theatre in DC. The awe-inspiring stage wizardry draws audiences in, but the heart of the story is what will leave with them."

"...No doubt the experience is richest for these uber fans, where mere mention of an obscure character (Neville Longbottom!) is cause for knowing titters. We mere muggles are carried along by the solid central cast of the Potters senior (John Skelley) and junior (Emmet Smith) as well as the flamboyant and entertaining young Malfoy, Aidan Close, a Takoma Park native, it turns out."

"...I can’t tell you whether you should go see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. That is for you to decide based on your feelings on how an author’s attitudes reflect on their work. But I can say that the show is a visual and magical treat, with some affecting moments and some good-to-excellent performances. Many talents have put their all into the play, and it shows."
