"...Yes, thanks to the play's extraordinarily effective interweaving of the disparate. Small details (like Joaquin's adulation of rock guitarist Slash) that fuse with an immense rage-summoning issue (American gun violence). Funny memories, and a brief but chilling evocation of murder. Shifts in Oliver's performance mode, from standup-comedy-style banter to snippets of heartfelt proselytizing to the wordless completion onstage - with paint and paper - of an edgy visual artwork. Guitar solos may be a leitmotif in "Guac," at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, but the play's workings are more symphonic."

It's an extension, as Oliver tells us himself, of a protest campaign that got him invited to, and then ejected from, President Joe Biden's White House, following a stunt where he climbed a construction crane near the Ellipse and unfurled a banner of Guac's face. That's punk as fuck, and probably more effective than his nightly homilies to a bloc as reliably liberal as Woolly Mammoth subscribers."
