These quilts, a labor of love and necessity, turn out to be valuable works of art. Featuring three strong women and interwoven with gospel music, Gee's Bend is a deeply personal story of family, self-discovery and artistic expression.

"...But the hallmark of this production is the music: gospel and blues that underline emotions and crisply bridge the scenes. Percussionist Greg Holloway, working a variety of instruments, provides all the accompaniment that the confidently harmonizing cast needs. Roz White grows stronger by the scene as she plays Sadie across the ages, and Margo Moorer (as Sadie’s flippant sister), Anthony Manough (dynamic as Macon), and Duyen Washington (doubling first as Sadie’s mother, then as her daughter) all do vivid work. Whether joyful or downcast, the singing is beautiful and heartfelt."

"...What seems somewhat less authentic is the lack of quilting lingo in the script. Surely these ladies would have mentioned more sewing terms than just needle and thread as they sat stitching designs known as “Roman Stripes,” “Lazy Gals,” and “Courthouse Steps.” They are not entirely convincing as expert quilters, but their characters still feel fleshed out. Come show’s end, they’re marveling at unseen quilts hanging on a museum walls. For the audience, what’s transpired onstage is just as vivid."

MetroStage’s production of Gee’s Bend is everything I could possibly hope for. The story spans seventy years in ninety minutes and explores characters behind the famed Gee’s Bend quilts by focusing on a mother and two daughters in an isolated part of rural Alabama. The small African American community tucked into the “bend” of the Alabama river is in constant jeopardy of being cut off from the mainland, and thus functions as a self-sufficient microcosm, where the women master skills such as quilting.
