Camelot Reviews

"...As the lights begin to go out on Arthur's vision of Camelot, so too do they dim on Spangler's stage. By the show's finale, lighting designer Robert Wierzel renders the action in a soft glow, soft as candlelight, perhaps to remind us that Camelot never existed, or existed only in our dreams."

"...Formidable craft and intent have been applied in Shakespeare Theatre's production of Camelot to present a version of Lerner and Loewe's classic musical that connects with modern audiences. For director Alan Paul and his spellbinding cast, the effort pays off with an intriguing, convincingly acted philosophical drama inflamed by lust and betrayal."

"...It is worth the price of admission just to hear the amazing cast sing the glorious songs by Lerner & Loewe. It is wonderful escapist entertainment, and sometimes that's enough."

"...Camelot. Camelot! The stuff of legends, the place of dreams, this is the production of both and you won't want to miss this revitalizing effort being set down at Shakespeare Theatre Company this summer."

"...Overall, Camelot's vocal performances are to-a-one stunning. Perhaps due to the complexity of Loewe's score-demanding both a wide vocal range and agility-STC's production favors a more formal, operatic sound. This formality sometimes leads to more jarring transitions between dialogue and song. More problematic, however, are the thick accents (English, Scottish and French) rendering some lyrics indecipherable and leaving the audience scratching its head."

"...Director Alan Paul is bringing Lerner and Loewe's CAMELOT to a new generation, and his efforts couldn't be timelier. This stunning Shakespeare Theatre Company production at Sidney Harman Hall is a beacon of light in a city besieged by political unrest and uncertainty."
