"...All members of the cast, including the youngest, give dead-on performances as they excavate the history around them."

"...Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ “Appropriate” is in some ways as American as apple pie. Americans, unlike say the British, show their angst. Whether it is Williams’ Stanley Kowalski or Miller’s Willie Loman, family members don’t keep stiff upper lips when upset. They yell, scream, and, sometimes, even brawl. Now playing at Olney Theatre Center, “Appropriate” won both an Obie and a Tony for Best Play and Best Revival."

"...Appropriate is a masterclass in gritty, unrestrained performance that uses clever staging to deliver a serpentine story of family reckoning."

"...An ambitious piece requires bold casting choices, and Olney’s production delivers in spades. As the default matriarch of the surviving family, Kimberly Gilbert delivers a visceral performance as Toni. In Act II especially, Gilbert bares Toni’s soul and guides us through her insecurities, faults, and everything in between. The intensity of her performance is a bit jarring and perhaps out of place in Act I, but one can easily forgive these moments when considering the weight of Act II’s dynamism."

"...Every family has its secrets, of course. Some go with their bearers to the grave, while others are left to deal with them. Whether or not that actually happens is, Appropriate seems to suggest, the difference between being free and being haunted."
