A Little Night Music

Signature Theatre
4200 Campbell Avenue Arlington

When Stephen Sondheim first brought A Little Night Music to the stage in 1973, the musical's elegance and charm led to four Tony Award wins. Now its Sweden-set tale of a tangled web of affairs comes to Arlington in a new production at Signature Theatre. Centered around the charismatic actress Desiree Armfeldt, A Little Night Music follows one terribly complicated weekend in the country, where lovers, ex-lovers, wives and husbands all come together, and seemingly endless possibilities for new romances and second chances bring plenty of surprises. Witty and filled with deeply touching moments of regret and desire, A Little Night Music also features one of Sondheim's most popular songs, the haunting "Send in the Clowns."

"...A multi-faceted gem of a musical, Stephen Sondheimís A Little Night Music is realized with utmost skill and elegance in a brilliant new production at Signature Theatre. Director Eric Schaeffer and company strike an enviable balance between sparkle and understatement, reflecting the myriad aspects of longing explored in Sondheimís uncharacteristically hopeful roundelay of coupling and uncoupling."

"...No. To call Signature Theatre's production of A Little Night Music rich would be akin to calling an Aston Martin just a car or a Rolex just a watch. Using one word to praise this production is simply a disservice. Signature's A Little Night Music is a divine production brimming with exquisite performances and hilarity. Director Eric Schaeffer has found the intimacy, charm and humor that was sorely lacking in the 2009 Broadway revival, restoring Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical to its full glory."

"...A Little Night Music is one of my personal favorites from the Stephen Sondheim canon. Set in Sweden, circa 1900, it examines the intertwining lives of several couples who explore their romantic plights. Sondheimís score, it is no secret, was composed entirely on variations of three-quarter time, beginning with waltzes and expanding to incorporate many other time signatures, providing a swirling soundscape that pays homage to Maurice Ravel, coupled to some of Sondheimís most pointed lyrics."
