"...Start with Shakespeare. Add some very clever dramaturgy, cut a few characters, and incorporate a gifted group of artists and you have a magical night in the theatre. The D.C. debut of Fiasco Theater’s production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a delight. The astonishing success of Fiasco Theatre, a New York theater company created by graduates of the Brown University/Trinity Rep M.F. A. acting program, is richly deserved. Kudos to Janet Griffin, Folger Theatre’s Artistic Producer, for welcoming this highly talented ensemble to the District."

"...Fiasco Theater, a small troupe that specializes in contemporizing the classics without electronic bells and whistles, has taken up residence at the Folger Theatre with a buoyant new production of Two Gentleman of Verona. The result is Shakespeare at its most relatable, in a production that presents Two Gents as the best play for teenagers that the Bard ever laid upon a stage. Screw Romeo and Juliet. Star-crossed lovers seem so 16th century compared to these vengeful BFFs."

The key to Fiasco’s solution to the Two Gents dilemma: Every character is absolutely guileless, and wears his deficiencies on his sleeve. Julia is impulsive, passionate and capricious in her opening scenes, thus making her love faintly ridiculous, and all of these things toward the end of the production, to the great advantage of her character.
