"...The Seven Year Itch is one of those titles that people may know, but most of them aren’t familiar with George Axelrod’s 1952 original play. (They may well know the 1955 film version with Marilyn Monroe, which differs from the play in important ways.) American Century Theater in Arlington, Virginia, has brought back the play – originally staged by the company in its 2002-2003 season – as part of its valedictory season."

"...While Rauscher effectively plays up Sherman’s neurotic nature, Claasen’s decision to cast an actor significantly older than the character in a play that emphasizing aging is a puzzling one. It does, though, act as a sort of commentary on 50 being the new 40, now that so many decades have gone by since the original production. Kashner does her best to bring a ditzy sort of appeal to The Girl, who’s really more progressive and intelligent than anyone really gives her credit for."

"...The last two acts show the principals and ensemble to best advantage. Mr. Rauscher gives a 360 performance, from the inside out, of his vacillating character, fighting the impulses, rationalizing, and temporizing before he gets himself caught. The savvy Ms. Kashner parlays the perky 1950s ideal of femininity into a modern equivalent of a love-him-then-leave-him persona. Yes, they've each slipped out of their brief encounter but only to find themselves more bound to their real world than ever. The imaginative lives reenacted cinematically (from bizarre to noir), or the projected succubi and the avenging furies (Rachael M. Loose, Chanukah Jane Lilburne, Rachel Murray) that are conjured forth are the real treats of the play. Maybe that's the lifecycle on parade here: impulsivity, servitude, flight, and commitment. As has been written: "In dreams begin responsibilities.""

Axelrod’s adulterous tale is full of funny zingers (“I’m strictly a one-night guy”) and dialogue (“Helen goes away, and I run amok.” He was also a keen observer of male behavior: Richard believes that at 42 he looks 28, laments that ladies age poorly, and is convinced that most women have hit on him during some banal, obligatory interaction (like at work).
