This horror/sci-fi parody takes place on a dark and stormy evening, as virginal sweethearts Brad and Janet find themselves stranded on a lonely road. Weathering the storm in the mysterious mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the young couple's lives are turned upside down and their minds expanded by the kooky, kinky residents of Frank-N-Furter's household. The beloved musical, which inspired the long-running midnight movie, features audience participation and classic songs such as "Sweet Transvestite," "Damn It, Janet" and, of course, the pelvic-thrusting "Time Warp."

"...Acoustically, though, something's amiss: You sit within feet of the stage in Studio's Metheny space and yet frequently can't make out the song lyrics. The actors are drowned out by the band or not providing clear enunciation on their own. And although some of the voices are up to the task - like that of Matthew G. Myers as Eddie, in a rousing "Hot Patootie," or Rogan, singing "Once in a While" - others have pitch problems or, at times, sound as though they're caterwauling."

"...An audacious attack on the sexually repressed with an emphasis on in-your-face interaction and over-the top musicality are the hallmarks of the current production of The Rocky Horror Show, now playing at The Studio Theatre's 2ndStage. A veritable phantasmagoria of provocative fetish wear, suggestive body movements and interactive audience involvement, Director Keith Alan Baker and co-Director Alan Paul have offered up an intriguing, intense, and fast-paced interpretation of the now infamous cult favorite. This interpretation also stresses an emphasis on the jolting and frenetically-paced music by Richard O'Brien (who also wrote the Book and the Lyrics)."

"...In Studio Theatre's production of Rocky Horror, staged to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the show's original London run, Frank's house of debauchery is less a garden of earthly delights and more a nightmarish darkroom under the influence of bath salts. Directed by Studio's Keith Alan Baker and Shakespeare Theatre's Alan Paul, the show's cast is led by Mitchell Jarvis (Broadway's Rock of Ages), whose Frank is, quite simply, terrifying. With grotesque makeup smeared all over his face (like a cross between Pennywise the Clown and Baby Jane) we first meet Frank as he snorts something off a tray and then leers, bug-eyed, at his new playthings with the frantic air of a tweaker on a four-day meth binge."

"...Baker and Paul also do a great job of sending up some homages from the 1975 movie, while still making the jokes their own. The ensemble of Transylvanians were present throughout the show, scattered in the audience, as a reference to the midnight viewings and to encourage audience interaction. The ensemble, however, were pretty underused, and quite often on the periphery of the audience where it was difficult to see. And due to the large size of the ensemble, when they were all on stage it became quickly crowded, and claustrophobic. Despite the size constraints, however, everyone on stage seemed to be having a great time. Sexy fun was had by all!"

"...Studio Theatre's production is on one hand incredibly well done, but on the other hand is missing something that made The Rocky Horror Show so notorious - it's imperfections. Is it possible to make one of the quirkiest, raunchiest theatre shows in the world so over-produced and slick that most of the original rawness isn't there? Is a B-movie with high production value still a B-movie? While I relished in Studio's production as if it were an exquisite pastry, I found myself wondering where the Twinkie went."

Studio’s Rocky Horror crackles with energy and invention, joy and savagery, and if there’s a little bit of self-satisfaction in it as well, it’s our self-satisfaction: we own it and we love it.
