In this adaptation of Ovid's ancient Greek legend, Philomela's devotion to her beloved sister Procne launches her on a journey of terror and brutality as the sisters attempt to reunite across oceans. Olivier Award-winning playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker's lyrical text is rich with wit, economy and savage theatricality as it tells this tale of two sisters bound by love, violence and betrayal. Directed by Allison Arkell Stockman, this Constellation Theatre Company production features original live music by Tom Teasley.

Guban transforms the Source Theatre into an opulent little den, with slender gilded slabs at the back of a long ramped stage that’s painted shiny black and streaked with bloody red. Also nestled in the back, in something like a DJ booth, is Tom Teasley, steadily playing live original music on a host of fascinating international instruments."

"...At first glance, Nightingale is just another version of the Philomele and Procne myth. Two sisters, daughters of the King and Queen of Athens (Edward Christian and Vanessa Bradchulis), are separated when Procne (Dorea Schmidt) is married to the Thracian king Tereus (Matthew Schleigh). Lonely in her new home, Procne sends her husband to bring Philomele (Megan Dominy) to visit. But Tereus falls in love with Philomele, and decides that marriage and consent shouldn’t be obstacles to a king. Tereus rapes Philomele and cuts out her tongue to prevent his crime from being revealed. In Ovid’s version of the tale, Philomele reveals the crime by sewing a tapestry; in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s version of the story, it’s a puppet show. The two women have their revenge on Tereus, and the three are turned into birds by the gods."

Constellation Stage captures the multilayered stories from The Love of the Nightingale with full regalia and mythical epic bearing in the intimate Source space. With the staging so beautifully rendered, it almost seems like an optical illusion of more square footage than what is actually there. Entering the stage flanked by lofty golden panels, you feel like you’re entering a majestic corridor a guest included as part of the immediate setting, thanks to A. J. Guban’s scenic design.
