"...Conor McPherson loves the supernatural. His plays exude an otherworldliness that seeps into the dialogue and infects the players. But, his plays aren’t about the supernatural. They seem to highlight the underpinning passion and intricacy of the lives that spin around the ghosts and the visions that his characters perceive. And, there is always the idea that what they see may or may not be real. How much is perception, and how much is reality, and how much of reality is perception?"

"...If there’s anyone who knows how to present McPherson’s delicately inarticulate plays it’s Scena Theater’s artistic director Robert McNamara — this is his eighth such production. And the disarming attempts at communication may not be, as he claims, an allegory for Dublin’s pre-bust boom, but they clearly are a commentary on the increasing distances between people, even in a city bustling with them."

Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s Shining City raises a question about our demons: do we make them up to punish ourselves, or do they exist outside us in the world? For most of the play, the answer seems to be that we are haunted by our actions and their repercussions, the gravest of which may come to seem like independent agents. But the play leaves the other answer on the table, too, without entirely embracing either of them.
