"...Directed by Eric Tucker, the rather frantic “Hamlet” and the more moving and trenchant “Saint Joan” run in rotating repertory at Olney’s Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab through Oct. 20. Suitably enough, given the risk-taking propensities of the plays’ title characters, the Bedlam productions boast their own audacity: Each relies on a mere four actors, in modern dress, on a stage that features only bare-bones set elements."

"...Saint Joan is George Bernard Shaw’s version of the rise and fall of Joan of Arc. Joan was an illiterate, teenage farm girl in 15th Century France who claimed to hear voices. God’s word was passed to her through Saint Catherine’s and Saint Margaret’s voices which directed her to lead the army of France against the British. She was successful on the battlefield, but ran into trouble when faced with political resistance from the church and the nobles in power."

"...Many years ago, when I saw Cats for the first and only time, I remarked to my companion at the performance that while the stagecraft was fabulous, my idea of a great show was one that would knock my socks off played on a bare stage in street clothes. I saw such a show Sunday night. The Bedlam company, a four-person troupe from New York, presented a breathtaking version of Shaw’s Saint Joan at Olney Theatre’s black box. In repertory with Hamlet, Saint Joan runs through the end of October. If you value absolutely stunning, absorbing theater, do not miss the opportunity to see it."

The voices in Joan of Arc’s head guide her on a journey into parts unknown, winning hearts and minds to her cause. The cast of Saint Joan are living a similar life these days, having wandered far from New York into Olney, Maryland (not exactly parts unknown, but close). And the multitude of voices from which they take their cues — two dozen roles are here divvied up among four actors — form a grander harmony, thanks to the intricate and compelling language of George Bernard Shaw’s 1923 play.
