Three generations of WSC Avant Bard Artistic Directors converge for this Harold Pinter favorite, an acting vehicle of stunning depth and resonance. No Man's Land features a fallen poet and his drunken dispute with a mysterious stranger over success, adventures and romantic conquests. WSC Artistic Director Emeritus Christopher Henley teams up with his predecessor, Brian Hemmingsen, to star in this play of wit, deceit, and the battle between memory and imagination. The production will be staged by new Artistic Director Tom Prewitt, who helmed Six Characters in Search of an Author earlier this season.

"...The world premiere production of No Man's Land, in 1975, starred John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson, who 20 years earlier had appeared regularly together as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson on the BBC's Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio series. I sometimes half-listen to those old Sherlock Holmes episodes on my iPod at night as I'm trying to go to sleep. They're as comforting and familiar and No Man's Land is disquieting and alien. But Henley and Hemmingsen honor that disquiet with their rich, controlled performances."

"...Washington, DC, with its academic, linguistic highfalutinness disguising its ego-infected personal attacks and its cut-throat career moves could not be more apropos for Pinter. In this No Man's Land you won't get the real thing and leave with open wounds, but you'll at least get the flavor of what a tongue-in-cheek knife-fight is like and leave imagining the possibilities."

I believe you should watch this play, and here’s why: two of the best performances I have seen on the Washington stage this year. Henley’s boneless Spooner recalls Bill Irwin’s portrayal of George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf opposite Katherine Turner at the Kennedy Center a few years ago.
