The granddaddy of all rock musicals, Hair is at once both a joyous celebration of youth and a poignant journey through a tumultuous 1960s America. This exuberant musical about a group of teenagers searching for truth, peace and love in a Vietnam War era, has struck a resonant chord with audiences of all ages. Hair features an electic score filled with classics, including "Aquarius," "Let the Sun Shine In," "Good Morning, Starshine" and "Easy To Be Hard." The themes and struggles in Hair remain vital and relevant to the times we live in today.

"...The standouts are Josh Sticklin as Berger, the self-absorbed leader of the tribe, and Paul Scanlan as Berger’s pal Claude, who wishes he were a blue-collar Brit (in the song “Manchester”) and can’t decide whether to burn his draft card or just report for duty. These two are the show’s tentpoles, but they get great vocal and physical backup from Ian Anthony Coleman as Hud, who heartily blasts through African American stereotypes in “Colored Spade” and “Abie Baby.”"

"...Made up mostly of diverse local talent, the show’s full-voiced cast is young and energetic. And though they look at home in their fringy vests, striped bell bottoms, granny skirts (compliments of costume designer Chelsey Schuller) and wild hair, they surely had to be familiarized with references to Spiro Agnew and others. While some of the acting, especially comedy, is lacking, their singing is largely on point — they do the familiar songs justice. Standouts include Jade Jones who demonstrates a big soulful voice and comedic flair. And Christian Montgomery is terrific as Woof, a gay hippie boy who insists he’s straight yet carries a very public torch for Mick Jagger."

"...Although the show exists primarily within a more flamboyant space, a space of communal love, its undercurrent of repressed intimacy occasionally pops out, as in the song “Easy to Be Hard,” sung by Sheila (Carolina Wolfson) to Berger. Berger’s crazed reaction to her personal expression of love echoes a sharp irony to a world supposedly bathed in such sentiments."

Keegan Theatre on Church Street NW has been transformed into a hippie’s paradise, like a found loft in the East Village, appointed with mismatched furniture, rope swings, and cozy grottos where love is love and love-making is always a possibility. Out of this perfect greenhouse the days of Vietnam War protests, dropping out, and free love grows anew in this mesmerizingly sensual trip to 1967 for the “American tribal love-rock musical,” Hair.
