Gypsy

Signature Theatre
4200 Campbell Avenue Arlington

Bold, brassy and remarkably charming, Gypsy's Momma Rose puts today's Dance Moms to shame. Sherri L. Edelen (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Company, Hairspray) plays Mama Rose, the ultimate stage mom, who grooms her two daughters to be stars on the waning 1920s vaudeville circuit, only to see one of them leave her behind to become a burlesque sensation. With book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy features crowd-pleasing classics like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" and the show-stopping "Rose's Turn."

Resistance is futile. Not succumbing to the cheeky charms of Gypsy at Signature Theatre is like planting a raspberry on the pugnacious puss of Mama Rose herself. Not a good idea if you value your life. Far better to sit back and let director Joe Calarco’s emotive love letter to stage moms and the vaudeville-burlesque eras wash over you like a warm bubble bath.

"...Directed by Joe Calarco with emotional intelligence and abiding respect for the artistry of composer Jule Styne, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and book writer Arthur Laurents, this palpably lump-in-your-throat "Gypsy" is easily the most accomplished revival of a musical in these parts since Arena Stage's "Oklahoma!" in 2010."

"...Signature's production of Gypsy comes ten years after Bernadette Peters scored a Tony nomination playing Rose in the 2003 Broadway revival, and just five after Patti LuPone won for the same role in 2008. Edelen's Rose is frumpier and, if possible, more desperate. When she launches into "Rose's Turn" in front of a vast triptych of screens forming an image of her face in the show's final number, the disconnect between the movie star fantasy and the reality couldn't be more stark. It's this distortion of the truth into spun webs of silky delusion that Edelen's sheer force of will makes you believe in."

"...Everything's coming up sunshine and Santa Claus at Signature Theatre. Hands down--Signature Theatre's Gypsy is the best musical I have seen this year. Signature Theatre pulls out all the stops for Gypsy, and the resulting spectacle is nothing short of spectacular! This Gypsy is swell and it's great! Its a holiday treat you won't want to miss!"
