"...The cast lends strong voices to the spoken dialogue taken from Matthew and to Schwartz's eclectic mix of songs, with just an occasional off-note. Schwartz turned Jesus's teachings of loving thy neighbor, turning the other cheek, eschewing wealth and helping the poor into ballads, rock anthems, folk and pop tunes. His score isn't uniformly memorable, yet the lovely, dipping melody of "Prepare Ye," the galvanizing "O, Bless the Lord, My Soul," the steamy "Turn Back, O Man" and a few others lift the show out of the pulpit and into the rafters."

Godspell is more of a revue, with toe-tapping songs that sandwich meaty traditional parables, but it lacks much of a plot, or well-developed characters, or a really cohesive setting (which is grounded in the hippie Jesus Movement, reflected by Paige A. Hathaway’s elegantly rough desert set). But, if you go in expecting a revue, ready to relax and enjoy the ride, you should be quite happy with Olney’s Godspell.
