"...Tevye the milkman has been played by countless performers since “Fiddler on the Roof” began its long Broadway history 50 years ago, yet at Arena Stage, Jonathan Hadary acts the part like it was written yesterday. Hadary’s Tevye is funny but not a buffoon, warm but not schmaltzy — and, boy, does he connect to his increasingly rebellious daughters. He is the genial, breakable heart of a production that does justice to one of the gold-standard American musicals."

"...Fiddler on the Roof remains a musical theater audience pleaser, as it has been for five decades. The Arena Stage production is handsome and solid. Under Molly Smith’s direction, the Arena’s Fiddler has a traditional burnished reflective surface. I am sure that many in the audience were ready, willing and able to sing each word of each song. Certainly there were many a rapturous face seen as the production unfolded. That is a good thing; a very good thing."

"...Fiddler on the Roof is the type of musical that generally divides people into two camps. On one side are those who grew up with the show and have seen so many productions it might take a miracle from God — or at least a nightmare portending grave consequences — to convince them to see yet another one. And then there’s the decidedly non-Jewish camp, people who might be familiar with the show and might even love a couple of the American Songbook standards that derive from it, such as “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” To see a production of the show in 2014, though, seems a little retrograde. Isn’t it old-fashioned and out-of-date?"

The show—Joseph Stein's book and the timeless songs by Jerry Bock (music) and Sheldon Harnick (lyrics)—is as tightly constructed as ever, Jerome Robbins' legendary dances (adapted for in-the-round staging by Parker Esse) still thrill and delight, but this production does not reach the peaks of some of Arena's earlier musicals, possibly because of peculiar staging choices by director Molly Smith."

"...Fiddler might have been dismissed as too schmaltzy, too sentimental were it not for the brilliant score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, the witty book by Joseph Stein, and the dynamic choreography by Jerome Robbins. Its song like “Sunrise, Sunset” became instant classics, and its focus on the quandary between maintaining tradition and bending to a new generation resonated with audiences around the world—for instance Japan, where it was a huge hit. The show has the added advantage that it was dated when it debuted. It remains a daguerreotype of a time and place that exist in distant memory and folklore."

"...Nothing had changed in a show that has been done many times in uncounted places with uncounted actors. Here was a fiddler, this time ensconced in wooden trappings above the station. Here was Tevye, the milkman, his absolute faith in tradition being time and time again tested by his daughters and constant impending disasters at the hands of their Russian overlords. Here were the familiar songs that echoed and fine-tuned the rhythms of life in the village and in Tevye’s family—“Sunrise, Sunset,” “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life” and so on."

It’s easy to become jaded in the theater. I see it all the time. Actors who have played the same part one too many times; critics who have seen the same productions of the same plays one hundred too many times. Fiddler on the Roof is a perfect example of one of these plays. The play is done to death by every high school, community theater, and every midsize theater with even a modest Jewish subscriber base.
