Crossing explores the interwoven stories of eight people from different decades of the past century who come together at a train station. Some are waiting for the train, others are waiting for visitors, a few are just…waiting. All of them are searching – for hopes and dreams, for new beginnings, for answers. As their stories are brought to musical life in the train station, the characters discover that, while every life is different, the journey is always the same. With music ranging from gospel to pop to rock, Crossing unites the musical eras through the souls who lived them.

"...The undercooked quality of the piece is reflected in the fact that director Eric Schaeffer also designed the modest set, a simple, utterly symmetrical train-station platform. Kathleen Geldard capably costumes the actors to represent the range of decades, and there is no faulting the thoughtful, sure-voiced cast. But at this junction in the "Crossing" journey, that train platform is basically working out like a concert stage for Conner's loosely connected, bighearted songs."

"...Crossing focuses on the chance meetings of eight people from different walks of life, all waiting on the platform at a train station. Actually, we're talking impossible chance meetings, since every character comes from a different decade over the past two centuries of American history. There's the slave woman seeking a better, freer life via the Underground Railroad; the young Army recruit and his mother as he sets off for overseas fighting in World War I; and the wanderlust backpacker from a high-tech today. And then there's the oddly placed Nova Y. Payton as an ''Unknown Woman,'' who interacts with the characters as they share their stories and struggles and engage each other."

"..."When will the train come?" the little boy asks Payton, who wanders the stage touching shoulders with a concerned hand, Roma Downey-style. "It will come when you're ready," she tells him. Crossing clocks in at less than 90 minutes, no intermission, but it won't take nearly that long for you to pine for that train whistle to sound."

"...Signature Theatre is the only theatre in the area that is constantly producing world premiere musicals; so for the first attempt of the 2013/2014 season, they have chosen to present a musical with an interesting idea, top notch performers, and a great score by Signature's Resident Composer Matt Conner. Crossing tells the story of people from different time periods coming together on the same train station platform, all looking for the next thing in their lives. As this is a world premiere, there is room for improvement, but the show is off to a good start."
