Coming off his critically-acclaimed Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, director Eric Schaeffer returns to his home as the artistic director at the Signature Theatre to helm this eagerly-anticipated revival of the composer's Company. It's a 35th birthday celebration for still-single Robert, attended by his married friends and his three girlfriends. Through a series of vignettes, this witty and wise musical reflects on connections and commitments, marriage and contemporary relationships. The show also boasts the hit song "Being Alive," plus "Side By Side," "Another Hundred People" and "The Ladies Who Lunch." With a score by Sondheim and book by George Furth, Company won multiple Tony Awards in both its original staging and its Broadway revivals. Known as something of a Sondheim specialist, Schaeffer has guided Signature to more than 70 Helen Hayes Awards, plus a 2009 Regional Theatre Tony.

"...It's Weaver who takes "Company" most successfully in a novel direction. Amy is usually played as fragile and sort of ditsy, a woman panicking at the final leap into full-fledged adulthood. (As her patient groom, Paul Scanlan proves an ideal foil.) But Weaver manages to convince us that "Getting Married Today" is a kind of manifesto of clear-headedness. Her reasons for not getting married - she does get hitched, of course - make far more sense than anything Bobby can come up with."

"...It's hard to imagine a better way for Signature to showcase its strengths than with this current revival, led by artistic director Eric Schaeffer and featuring choreography by 29-year-old associate artistic director Matthew Gardiner. The ensemble cast boasts an embarrassment of riches, including Erin Weaver as the maniacally neurotic Amy, Sherri L. Edelen as Joanne, and Tracy Lynn Olivera as Sarah, to mention just a few. As Robert, Matthew Scott is charming but just slippery enough to convey the cyclical angst of the commitment-phobic. As one character aptly puts it, he's "a thing of beauty and a boy forever.""

"...Stephen Sondheim's musicals have been a long standing tradition at Signature Theatre since its inception, so it is fitting that the 2012/2013 season at Signature ends with one of Sondheim's best. Company premiered on Broadway 43 years ago and has had several revivals in NYC, including one where the actors played their own instruments. Signature Theatre's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer along with a cast and creative team of stellar talent has given us a Company revival that is more than worthy of continuing its journey after the Signature run concludes. The show presents a not so rosy look at marriage which is why some audiences don't like it. For me it brings up the point that not every marriage is perfect and life is not all "puppies and rainbows" (phrase used by permission from my wife Jen Perry)."
