S.N. Behrman was the American Noel Coward, a master of witty drawing room comedy, and Biography was his masterpiece. The plot revolves around a single career woman's acceptance of a hefty fee to write her tell-all memoirs, and the problems her threatened candor creates. Director Steven Mazzola made TACT's previous Behrman comedy, The Second Man, one of the company's high points, and Biography promises to be better still.

"...Playwright S.N. Behrman (1893-1973) wrote plays between 1924 and 1964, but he was most renowned for his comedies of manners in the 1930s. American Century Theater in Arlington, Virginia, has put together an entertaining production of Behrman's 1932 hit Biography, paced smoothly by director Steven Scott Mazzola and anchored with a warm and multifaceted performance by Jennifer J. Hopkins."

"...Eventually, as the hours slowly go by, we realize that playwright S.N. Behrman has written a biography of an allegedly fascinating woman who has had erotic affairs with all kinds of celebrities. The woman dithers over whether or not she will accept much-needed money to write her memoirs for publication. Whatever she decides — to write or not to write, that is the question — Behrman creates a detailed dramatic portrait. In other words, leave the autobiography or no autobiography to the ditsy and distraught protagonist. As for Behrman, he painstakingly proceeds with his fictional biography of the fictional Marion Froude."

If you like your theatre smart and your characters fascinating, Biography is absolutely worth a look. This is high style, handsomely done.
