Retired hatmaker Hetchman loves his hat and his wife, perhaps even in that order. When both go missing, he vows to stop at nothing to find them -- assuming he can muster the strength to leave his armchair and confront a talking wall and a hungry golem. In the fantastic, mind-bending world created by playwright Lauren Yee, anything can happen. Following a successful staged reading in 2012, The Hub Theatre present the fully-staged DC Premiere of this klezmer-inspired love triangle between a man, his wife ... and his hat.

"...Admittedly, the artful performances and ingenious design can't disguise the fact that Yee milks some of her conceits just a little too long and that her paean to love sometimes feels too pat. And the broken English in which several characters speak - a style of diction that the play doesn't fully justify, given that the setting is a magical world, not a world of recognizable nationalities and ethnicities - sometimes seems to angle for easy laughter. (The playwright has described the story as "klezmer-inspired.")"

Granted, it's a good looking hat that serenades the man with expressive clarinet melodies but after decades of marriage, shouldn't he at least be able to remember her name? What's a wife to do?"

"...Director Shirley Serotsky and the talented staff have created a world that can't really make sense as a whole, but wonderfully changes scene by scene. Lighting (Ken Wills) was effective in portraying various locales on the fly. The scene design (Leigh-Ann Friedel) also helps support this fast-moving time-bending paradigm."

This odd, affecting play is a festival of indifference – in particular the indifference of the elderly hatmaker Hetchman (Sasha Olinick), who loves his wife (Kerri Rambow) less than he loves his hat, but doesn’t love either of them enough to get out of his chair.
