A Thousand Splendid Suns at Arena Stage

A Thousand Splendid Suns

Arena Stage
1101 Sixth Street, SW Washington

Adapted from the New York Times bestselling novel by Khaled Hosseini (Kite Runner), the lives of two Afghan women are inextricably bound together. In the war-ravaged Kabul, Miriam and Laila become unlikely allies in the face of the insurmountable odds of a brutal and oppressive way of life. Hopes of a new life lead to an unselfish and shocking decision, changing the course of their futures forever. Called "emotionally stirring" (Los Angeles Times), this gripping and heart-rending fight for survival will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

"...“A Thousand Splendid Suns,” based on a novel by Khaled Hosseini, author of 2003’s “The Kite Runner,” is a clear-eyed illumination of that most accessible of ties, a mother’s bond with her endangered child. For anyone seeking an affecting tour of love among the ruins, booking passage here will be rewarded."

"... A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS at Arena Stage is a breathtaking production that will stay with you long after curtain call. Adapted by Ursula Rani Sarma based on the beloved novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini, A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS tells an unflinching story of the lives of two Afghan women bound together in war-ravaged Kabul. Despite the brutality of life in Kabul, both women exemplify the resilience and resourcefulness of women under even the harshest of circumstances."

"...Director Carey Perloff, who shows complete command of the work in her staging, commissioned Ursula Rani Sarma's adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel and premiered this production at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco where she was artistic director for 25 years. The visual aspects are stunning from the opening panorama of translucent mountains in front of a glowing sky that resembles pierced paper art and a spherical wire sculpture representing the sun (set design by Ken MacDonald, lighting design by Robert Wierzel)."

"...Director Carey Perloff first put this production together for the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and her adaptation of the piece to the Kreeger Theater space works in all its aspects. This is not always an easy show to watch: the anger and sadness and suffering of the characters demand real involvement on the part of the audience. But such involvement is richly rewarded. The combination of strong, evocative writing; fearless performances by the actors; and a superb physical production makes A Thousand Splendid Suns a show to remember."

"...Despite the script’s shortcomings, the acting is most compelling. Hend Ayoub (Mariam) and Mirian Katrib (Laila) are particularly powerful in their portrayals of girls growing into women and whose dreams get crushed in the harsh patriarchal system. They find small ways they to resist and comfort in each other."
