MetroWeekly - Highly Recommended

"...Friends of Dorothy, both young and young at heart, should find plenty to love in the Ford’s Theatre’s The Wiz. And “plenty” is the operative word for director Kent Gash’s smile-inducing production, which amps up the camp fabulousness of the classic ’70s “super soul musical” journey to L. Frank Baum’s wonderful world of Oz."

"...The Wiz at Ford's Theatre will probably be enjoyed most by folks that have not seen it before. It did not knock out my memories of the original production despite some strong performances and some of the production elements."

"...Midgette arguably has the most to do and carries it off, nailing her portrayals of not only down-to-earth Aunt Em but also Addaperle, the flighty Good Witch of the North, and Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, who in this version is the despotic head of a candy empire. Instead of dour black, Evillene wears a red dress appliqued with oversized bonbons on the skirt—more magic from costume designer Kara Harmon, who has also decked out the flying monkeys in sleek red leather suits and the regal Glinda (Awa Sal Secka) in African-inspired robes."

"...Ford Theatre's The Wiz, the Tony-Award-winning musical based on L. Frank Baum's novel, will leave you enthralled, amazed, and bedazzled. The show is a cornucopia of colors, dancing, singing, sizzle, rhythm and blues, jazz, funk, and a touch of disco. The music was fantastic, thanks to a book by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. Director Kent Gash has assembled a spectacular cast that has produced a smash."

"...It feels like the right time to have The Wiz back here in the nation's capital. That it's also so good-thanks to the direction of Kent Gash, who has magic hands-is like a bowl of sugar hidden inside another bowl of sugar. Sweet. Sweet. Sweet. Through and through."
