The Royale at 1st Stage Theatre

The Royale

1st Stage Theatre
1524 Spring Hill Road Tysons

Jay "The Sport" Jackson dreams of being the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, but in the racially segregated world of boxing in 1905, the odds are stacked against him. When a crooked boxing promoter hatches a plan for "the fight of the century," "The Sport" might land a place in the ring with the reigning white heavyweight champion. Inspired by the real-life experiences of Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight world champion, The Royale "captures both the beautiful frenzy of boxing and the (sadly still relevant) volatile state of race relations in America" (The Telegraph).

"...If you can't tell, I really enjoyed my time at 1st Stage last Sunday night. I've had several days to pick over this many-layered production, and every time I revisit it I have the pleasure of learning something new. The Royale is relevant and resonates through to the 21st Century, and is deserving of a foray to Tysons Corner."

"...This play about a boxer packs so many emotional punches into its compact six rounds, you might not know what hit you. As fists fly, bells clang, terse words burst, and the cast claps out each repercussion, you might feel the pace of your own pulse race. And even if the sport of boxing leaves you cold (as it does me), you might be moved to shed a tear and cheer."
