The Lightning Thief Reviews
DC Theater Arts- Highly Recommended
"...Adapted from Rick Riordan's 2005 fantasy-adventure novel The Lightning Thief, which has inspired multiple sequels, a film adaptation, a Disney+ series, and a full-length Broadway musical, The Lightning Thief - TYA Version, now playing at Adventure Theatre MTC, presents the story on stage as it was introduced off-Broadway in 2014: as a one-act, one-hour musical. Joe Tracz's book (directed by ATMTC artistic director Kurt Boehm) condenses Riordan's nearly 400-page novel, with 16 pop-rock songs by Rob Rokicki (music directed by Elisa Rosman) advancing the plot and providing most of its emotional reveals."

"...Despite the relatively small space, the set design by Megan Holden is cleverly flexible and combines with Hailey Laroe's projections to evoke the wide range of locations, including New York City, the ocean, the summer camp, the Underworld, and more. Choreography by Ashleigh King and fight choreography by Ryan Sellars keep the action non-stop and powerful. There are many costume changes required for the cast of seven and Bailey Hammett-Colwell's designs are fun to see. The actors all have strong singing skills and do not need to be as heavily amplified as they were opening weekend."

"...Moving from the visual to the sonic realm, the cast sounded great. There were many a sweeping belt from Crawford or Essex at the climax of a song that was beautiful and exciting. The music itself was fine. No one song in particular stood out, or was particularly memorable, at least to adult viewers, to no fault of the cast, who, as stated, were a pleasure to listen to and the reason why the music, though middling in its composition, was highly enjoyable."
