The Last 5 Years Reviews
MD Theatre Guide- Somewhat Recommended
"...While Velz's directing is conventional, it does properly provide the small universe of the show. It is the show itself that is the problem. Brown has been open about the fact that he wrote "The Last 5 Years" as a reflection on his failed marriage to stage actor Theresa O'Neill and as a way of reckoning with his own bad behavior. But while Brown and his show want us to see Jamie as just another selfish jerk, ex-boyfriend, he's much worse than that. Jamie Wellerstein is straight-up abusive to his partner and Brown and his script never seem to realize that."

"...The Last Five Years made its Broadway debut earlier this year with Nick Jonas starring as Jamie and Adrienne Warren as Cathy. The musical's first Broadway premiere received mixed reviews. It's worth noting that this musical is a challenge to put on. The story unfolds in just 90 minutes through a series of back-to-back songs, with only two actors performing on stage without an ensemble cast. NextStop Theatre's The Last Five Years, directed by Aria Velz, succeeds thanks to a talented cast and dreamlike atmosphere."

"...What marriage doesn't have its ups and downs? The average length of a marriage that ends in divorce is roughly seven to eight years. As the title implies, the bloom on the marital rose faded a bit early in The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown's two-person musical, now playing in Herndon at NextStop Theatre Company."
