Della makes cakes, not judgment calls - those she leaves to her husband, Tim. But when the girl she helped raise comes back home to North Carolina to get married, and the fiance is actually a fiancee, Della's life gets turned upside down. She can't really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.

"...The turmoil that follows is a mirror of such controversies in news accounts: Della’s faith won’t allow her to create a confection for a same-sex couple, even if her resistance jeopardizes being cast on a network bake-off series. On an impressively pristine, sitcom-ready bakery set by Jason Tamborini come some fairly predictable emotional bumps and bruises. Brunstetter, who wrote the sparkling book to Cinco Paul’s score for Olney Theatre Center’s hilarious “A.D. 16,” treads a tidier path in “The Cake.” It’s respectful to all its well-played characters, including Sam Lunay as Della’s unappreciative husband, Tim. But like a slice of red velvet made with a deficit of cocoa, it needs a little more bite."

"...What this makes for is essentially a 90-minute rundown of the major points for and against same-sex marriage. Perhaps if it was performed for a different audience, The Cake would indeed seem primarily a pro-LGBTQ play. In front of a liberal-leaning, DC-based audience, though, Brunstetter's mission is less about convincing people like Della to support same-sex marriage and more about convincing people who are decidedly not like Della that Della is not a hostile adversary."

Of course, “good” is highly subjective in this case, where the playwright shows more grace to the characters, deadlocked in their opposing views, than they might be inclined to grant one another."

"...Bekah Bruntstetter's play "The Cake" combines a number of timely topics with a confectionary smorgasbord for the eyes, and a highly-charged look at more than one relationship teetering on the edge. The production centers around the well-known Supreme Court case that first inspired Brunstetter-Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission in which a Colorado baker refused to create a wedding cake for an LGBTQ+ couple. The court sided with the store owner on the basis of religious freedom."
