Sleepy Hollow Reviews

"...The galloping sequence is just one of the pulse-quickening effects in this production, the latest in Synetic’s wordless adaptations of classics. Directed by Paata Tsikurishvili, with choreography by Irina Tsikurishvili, “Sleepy Hollow” also includes rousing fight scenes (complete with vaulting leaps and full-body throws); a nifty slow-motion riptide that carries characters back in time; and a scene in which the Headless Horseman (Scott S. Turner) generates a maelstrom of disembodied noggins."

"...My twelve-year-old came with me and was entranced the whole time, and I intend on seeing the show again with my older and younger sons because, frankly, Synetic’s Sleepy Hollow was far too inspiring and magnificent for them to miss."

"...Erie, sophisticated, physically astounding and quite beautiful, Sleepy Hollow is dance-theater at its magical best. Director Paata Tsikurishvili may have based the production on Washington Irving’s iconic tale of supernatural goings-on in rural Westchester County, but in his hands, it is a flight of storytelling fancy. This is a Headless Horseman with personality — dark, avenging, broken-hearted, and quite magnificent."

"...The design team has created an imaginatively creepy forest setting, specifically Phil Charlwood's scenic design of metal mesh tree trunks wrapped in rags and pieces of furniture that seem to grow from the ground and Brian S. Allard's unearthly lighting design cutting through the haze in unnatural-seeming colors. Erik Teague's costumes ground the performances in period while still being fluid enough to allow free movement."

"...Irina Tsikurishvili, Synetic co-founding choreographer and associate artistic director, choreographed the production. It was daring and devilish and creepy, and a masterwork of physical movement. Paata Tsikurishvili, founding artistic director of Synetic, directed this production. It was a taut, tension-racked 80 minutes that moved almost seamlessly."

"...Synetic's Sleepy Hollow takes no cues from Disney's version or even the 1999 remake by Tim Burton, which saw the tale go darker and deeper. It is far better-a richer, more provocative tale that blurs the line between good and evil and gives dimension and nuance to both Ichabod Crane and his supernatural nemesis, the Headless Horseman."

"...Like Synetic's summer 2018 production, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Sleepy Hollow draws from American literature and a variety of cinematic treatments. In typical Synetic fashion, however, the story is quite literally turned on its head. Director Paata Tsikurishvili and Adapter Nathan Weinberger have deepened and darkened the well-known plot, adding a tragic backstory for the Headless Horseman. Scenic Designer Phil Charlwood and Lighting Designer Brian S. Allard immediately pull the audience in by creating the perfect setting for this haunting tale - a setting that is both appropriately spooky and yet evokes a pervasive sadness."
