Singin' in the Rain Reviews

"...What can a stage production of "Singin' in the Rain" deliver that Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen's cinematic masterpiece didn't? Directed by Marcos Santana with kinetic charm, this safe but crowd-pleasing revival answers that question with the live showmanship of Tischler and the rest of its triple-threat stars."

"...Once again, Olney Theatre Center (OTC) has put on a tap-happy show. This time it's Singin' in the Rain, where the audience hums the familiar tunes as they ratta-ta-tap back to their cars. That was the scene last night at the opening of OTC's third production in its 81st season. And what a show it was."

"...Taking on the unenviable task of dancing into a musical role made famous by the peerless Gene Kelly, Rhett Guter acquits himself favorably in Olney Theatre’s exuberant new production of Singin’ in the Rain. Guter has experience stepping into Kelly’s tap shoes, having led a stellar ensemble in Olney’s aces On the Town last year. And he lends a breezy confidence and aw-shucks appeal to his leading man role here, although his take on silent movie star Don Lockwood lacks somewhat for sheer dazzle and showmanship."

"...While the stage adaptation of Singin' in the Rain now at the Olney Theatre Center is bubbly fun, it has an unsolvable problem: no performers or director, however accomplished, can ever erase the iconic image of Gene Kelly in the original 1952 film, written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and directed by Stanley Donen. The staging of major musical numbers will obviously borrow from the film choreography by Kelly and Donen, and the novelty comes from how theater technicians will create cinematic effects (yes, including rain) in a live performance."

"..."Singin' in the Rain" will drive away your stormy clouds with sparkling dancing, luminous singing and enough musical merriment to take you through the holidays and into the New Year."

"...For this clever stage adaptation, Comden and Green are credited with the book, which is great news for fans of the film - all the classic lines and gags make the transition to the stage and are as fresh as daisies. Likewise the backstage plot is intact, here presented with a delightful twist: the audience has arrived at Monumental Pictures Studios for the making of (you guessed it) Singin' in the Rain - and all talking, singing and dancing picture. And like the 1952 original, the catalog of Nacio Herb Brown and (lyricist turned film producer) Arthur Freed provides the tuneful array of songs for the evening."
