Ripcord Reviews

"...Thrift’s show is consistently good, though, at the big and little moments that catch you unaware. Matthew J. Keenan’s drab senior living set transforms into a haunted house at one point, with nightmare action that’s evocatively staged. Jared Shamberger gives a lovely performance as the tenderhearted Scotty goaded into a nifty gear shift; Shamberger gets one of the biggest laughs in a show full of gags that go “Gotcha!”"

"...The cute little old ladies are up to something at the sunny nursing home. They share the same room and enough wit to fight over the turf like two college roommates. If only we all could grow old with such spunk and physicality! The woman-child trope of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Ripcord at Keegan Theatre is the familiar key in a sound production filled with honest actors, stunning visuals, and imaginative design. Once you get into the humor of it, and just go along with the premise, you have a sporting good time."

"...Keegan's presentation is adequate but can't save the material. As Abby, Deb Gottesman is as relentlessly dour and drab as her outfits, and Claire Schoonover is an aggressively genial Marilyn, although I didn't know what to make of her accent, which was sometimes British (as is she), sometimes New York-y, and eventually settled down into some neutral Province of Theatrical Enunciation."

"...He knows how to keep a narrative snapping, at least until it gets to intermission. Suddenly, the mood turns, the competition needlessly extended and it takes a while to get around to the resolution. What was once a cheery diversion has turned suddenly into an unwanted binge."
