Primary Trust Reviews

"...The delicate layers of Booth’s play accumulate with the hushed steadiness of a snowfall. It’s an exploration of loneliness that also asks big questions about the social systems that are meant to provide care and stability. Come away with a handful of insights that live close to the surface and more may reveal themselves with time."

"...Primary Trust at Signature Theatre has one of the happiest endings ever. As in It’s a Wonderful Life kind of happy. I have some suggestions for how to prepare for attending this show. Bring tissues. Bring a sense of humor. And since the protagonist, Kenneth, says several times over the course of the play: “I don’t really believe in God or heaven or hell, but I do believe in friends,” I suggest that you bring a friend."

"...Thomas is open and gregarious in the role, employing Kenneth’s effusive smile as an expression of the contentment he finds in his routine, as well as a patch over painful wounds from his past. Eventually, that trauma comes pouring out, although Thomas’s grasp of the character feels stronger when Kenneth is smiling through pain rather than when he submits to it."

"...Director Taylor Reynolds has created a gem-like production of Primary Trust, Eboni Booth's lovely Pulitzer Prize-winning play, in a perfect venue: the small ARK Theatre at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. The four actors (two of whom play multiple roles) strike all the right emotional notes in a story about solitude, community, and finding one's place."

"...From the moment he takes the stage, Thomas commands it—no shock coming from the performer who played Hamilton in the eponymous musical’s 2022 national tour. Showcasing his range, Thomas commands it as Kenneth would—not Hamilton—with a quiet, anxious energy coupled with a genuine love for life, despite all its troubles. At its most raw, when Kenneth is at his lowest, Thomas’ performance inspires an anxious physical response—a churning stomach, a racing heart."

"...The team behind Signature’s regional premiere of this Pulitzer Prize-winning drama isn’t afraid to strip it down to the barest essentials. The “real-world” level of engagement (aside from all the tech and digital masks behind which we tend to hide), the complexity of emotion, and the purely human element of this piece are what make this play one you do not want to miss."
