Alfaro takes the chilling ancient Greek tale of Medea and re-imagines it in a Los Angeles Mexican-American immigrant community. After sacrificing nearly everything to begin this new life, Medea and her family weigh their love for each other against their drive to succeed. Mojada is an intense and passionate play, full of romantic fervor, magical realism, and a tense, gripping sense of foreboding that drives the characters ever forward towards more and more irreversible acts of love and violence.

"...The tragedy evolves in short bursts moving from the present to the past. The moments of magic realism, however, rise above the pedestrian set of this 1st Stage production. The simple, telling moments when the lights dim and the actors speak to the audience of their journey, history, pains, and dreams are when this production rises from the ordinary to the extraordinary."

"...Elena Velasco's task as director is admittedly a bit of a Herculean one. She has to bring together a number of 'big ticket' themes-more so than the burden Euripides carried in the original-and in the process, create a harmonious production that makes the unspeakable ending seem a logical, albeit tragic link in the chain of events. Velasco's choices work, and to her credit, those choices imbue the actors with even more gravitas than they might otherwise have had. It is a fluid, haunting production where dialogue, pantomime, and even some dance combine to evoke the stuff of which nightmares are made."
