King Lear

Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H Street NE Washington

Regarded among Shakespeare's greatest works, King Lear depicts an aging monarch's descent into madness as his family and country are torn apart by the jealousy and ambition of his children. This sweeping legend depicts the devastating consequences of pride, as King Lear's hubris and his daughters' hunger for land and power destroy not just their own family, but an entire nation as well. Part of its 10th anniversary season, Lean and Hungry Theater's groundbreaking production King Lear at D.C.'s Atlas Performing Arts Center features the company's first-ever immersive soundscape, designed to help envelop audiences in the universe of Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece.

"...Director Jessica Hansen, who also helped adapt the text, combines a perfect pitch ear for the Bard’s underlying intention and translates everything with a modern sensitivity. Perhaps the special ability comes from years of experience with radio drama, reducing everything into words and sounds across the airwaves. However she’s acquired it, it works."
